Band 7+ Strategies
Move from general preparation to targeted performance. Understand what stronger responses look like, identify your weakest skill, manage the test strategically and build a practical Band 7 checklist.
What actually separates Band 6 from Band 7
Band improvement is not about inserting difficult words everywhere. The difference is usually consistency: clearer development, better control, more flexible language and fewer noticeable errors.
Typical Band 6 pattern
Ideas may be relevant but unevenly developed. Vocabulary is adequate but repetition or awkward combinations can appear. Grammar has some range but errors are noticeable.
Band 7 target
Ideas are developed and organised clearly. Vocabulary is flexible and generally precise. A range of structures is used with good control, although occasional errors can still occur.
Which is the best Band 7 strategy?
How examiners decide your Writing score
Use the four assessment areas as a practical editing framework: Task Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy.
| Area | Band 7 focus | Self-check |
|---|---|---|
| Task Response | Clear position and developed main ideas; relevant support. | Did I answer every part of the question? |
| Coherence & Cohesion | Logical progression with appropriate paragraphing and referencing. | Can the reader follow my argument easily? |
| Lexical Resource | Enough range and flexibility to express meaning precisely. | Are my word choices natural and specific? |
| Grammar | Varied structures with generally good control. | Are errors occasional rather than constant? |

How examiners decide your Speaking score
Use the four speaking criteria to guide practice: Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy, and Pronunciation.
| Area | Band 7 target | Practice question |
|---|---|---|
| Fluency & Coherence | Speak at length with logical connections; pauses should not regularly block communication. | Can I develop an answer without losing my thread? |
| Lexical Resource | Use a range of vocabulary flexibly enough to discuss familiar and less familiar topics. | Can I paraphrase when I forget a word? |
| Grammar | Use a variety of structures with generally good control. | Can I combine ideas accurately? |
| Pronunciation | Make meaning clear through intelligible sounds, stress, rhythm and intonation. | Can a listener follow me comfortably? |
If you forget a word during Speaking, what is usually the best response?
Fix your weakest skill first
A targeted plan is more efficient than spending equal time on everything. Use recent practice results to identify the skill or question type that gives you the greatest opportunity for improvement.
Time management & exam-day strategy
Good timing protects your score. Practise with realistic limits so your strategy becomes automatic before test day.
What should you practise before the exam?
The Band 7 checklist: before test day
Use this as a final readiness check. A checklist cannot guarantee a band score, but it can expose gaps before the exam.
